The Voyage to Africa by Marielis Hoberg hb wdj ec $6…..

The Knights of King Midas Paul Berna hb gc $5….When the fire levelled the huts of elderly people living in Port Biou in the Riviera.  A group of children in France decide to try and raise enough money for a group of elderly people to have new homes built, before the town commissioner can turn the property into a resort. All the way through, they look on it as a game- they have fun earning the money, and gain a friend in the process. They rename their club The Knights of King Midas, and make plans. One million francs is their goal and how these ingenious crusaders go about achieving it will make young readers want to jump between the pages and join in. Not everything is fun, for the ""Knights of King Midas"" have their codes of discipline, their setbacks and, indeed, their serious loyalties. But their creative activities and esprit de corps are a marvel to watch, -- especially with this authentic typically French, atmosphere. All ages

The Devil in Vienna by Doris Orgel hb gc $5…

The Sojourner (author of The Yearling) by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings hb wdj ec $7….The Sojourner is the story of a good man: of the influence of his steady, quiet strength upon others, especially the members of his immediate family, and of what they--characters less strong and less stable--do to him throughout the course of a long life. Ereth’s Birthday by Avi hb wdj ec $6…A novel for children that you can read with a nine-year-old, or any age, is about a cranky porcupine who becomes a surrogate father to three fox kits. Very good: suspenseful, touching, and clever. It’s also nicely realistic (other than the talking animals) – the (vegetarian) porcupine struggles with the challenge of getting food for (carnivorous) foxes, and the foxes’ father, when he shows up, illustrates the differing approaches to caring for children that exist in the animal world. The narrator is excellent! All ages.

Dauntless Daughter of Desries: The Story of Mary MacKillop and her Work 1866-1966 by Sister M. Peter hb wdj gc $5…i

School at Cape Runaway by Lynne Owen hb wdj $6…

Stay Away from Simon! By Carol Carrick hb wdj ec $6….

James Fenimore Cooper Pages & Pictures hb wdj gc $7…

Papa and the Olden Days by Ian Edwards and Rachel Tonkin hb (picture book) ec $9….I like it when Papa tells stories about the olden days. There were no radios or TVs; instead families would sing around pianos. Rather than cars, everybody rode horses. The townspeople even had to make their own bread and bricks because the nearest city was far away. Although it was long ago, Papa still remembers those days with a smile. The Story of China by Lo Hui-Min illustrated by Elaine Haxton hb gc $6…

The White Mouse: The Story of Nancy Wake : Nurse; Reporter; Rebel; Spy by Peter Gouldthorpe hb ec $10….

Rain Stones by Jackie French pb as new $6…..Rain Stones' and the other stories in this collection reveal that the country is a magical place, that there is an extra dimension to be found by those whose minds and hearts are open to the possibility. Michael knows that the hills around Canberra are sleeping dinosaurs waiting for darkness to fall to begin their nightly dance. Jacob is blind, but he can show his friends things they never dreamt existed. And Helen is hoping that the rain stones will bring rain to the parched land where everything is dying. Powerful, imaginative and moving, this collection of short stories reveal the extraordinary early talent of this remarkable writer. Ages 10+

Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson pb as new $6…..Sent in 1910 to live with distant relatives who own a rubber plantation along the Amazon River, English orphan Maia is excited. She believes she is in for brightly coloured macaws, enormous butterflies, and "curtains of sweetly scented orchids trailing from the trees." Her British classmates warn her of man-eating alligators and wild, murderous Indians. Unfortunately, no one cautions Maia about her nasty, xenophobic cousins, who douse the house in bug spray and forbid her from venturing beyond their coiffed compound. Maia, however, is resourceful enough to find herself smack in the middle of more excitement than she ever imagined, from a mysterious "Indian" with an inheritance, to an itinerant actor dreading his impending adolescence, to a remarkable journey down the Amazon in search of the legendary giant sloth.  review by an 11 year old girl….”This is such a beautiful book. It is very easy to read and doesn’t preach or make it hard to understand, that you have to use a dictionary to look up but it isn’t simplistic either. It is about an orphan girl called Maia who longs for a real family and then some distant family are found in the Amazon. She is really excited about meeting them but let’s just say that they are not what she expects. ( her cousins are nasty and her doesn’t care for her) She has adventures in the Amazon and makes lots of friends. I won’t tell you if she is sent back to England or not. You will have to read it to find out! The characters are really lovely and the descriptions of the scenery are really vivid. The book is easy to start reading but then you get to a point in the middle where you just can’t put the book down. I could easily read this over and over. This book she has written for children 10+.”

The Boxcar Children #3 The Yellow House Mystery by Gertrude Chandler Warner pb ec $6…

Lemon Kelly Digs Deep by E.W. Hildick pb ec $4…

Emil and the Detectives by Erich Kastner pn ec $6…

Who was Abraham Lincoln? By Janet B. Pascal pb ec $8…This book provides a lot of information regarding the life of Abraham Lincoln. It does this chronologically going through multiple events, big and small, that are important to his life, and represents who he has become. It covers relationships with his family, as well as professional relationships. It explains his long journey in becoming president through all his failures as well as successes.  As this book provides a great amount of information, it does this effectively for the age group. I was almost surprised on how much information was included. It also is very organised. It has a table of contents, and separates each topic by chapters which makes it easy for a reader to follow along in a chapter book, as well as go back and find something quickly. The author also includes simple black and white illustrations which add to the text, and again make it easier for the reader to understand the text. As well, the book also includes excerpts of additional information (e.g. the civil war) to help the reader gain more knowledge on a topic that is important in understanding his life. At the end of the book, the author has included two timelines at the end of the book that compare Lincoln's life with the events happening in the world. Overall, this book provides a lot of accurate information while remaining entertaining and interesting to the reader. I would definitely recommend this book, as well as the series.
