Matt Chambers was there too - but he was from another century. What makes an experience real? How can two such different lives become so entangled? When Matt starts searching for the truth, he is unprepared for what he unravels. The Garden of Empress Cassia by Gabrielle Wang pb ec $6….There is a very genuine Chinese feel to this charming tale about Mimi, a Chinese-Australian young girl who received the most fascinating gift- a set of magical oil pastels. The story has this timeless, classic quality to it that will allow you to devour every page of this little, pretty book. You will love the diversity of the characters, the creativity of the plot and the magic that mystifies the entire thing. The characters are greatly developed including the minor ones. Best of all, you will love the themes of the story that have something to do with identifying oneself with one’s diverse cultures as well as passions. The illustrations are wonderful and quite imaginative. You will enjoy this according to the author and family who owned the book. This is the kind of novella that younger readers would appreciate. 9+
