      AussieHomeschool Closing Down   11/14/2019

All good things must come to an end and AussieHomeschool is no different. It is with much sadness yet even more necessity that this must be so.   As of Sunday evening, 17/11/2019 the Discussion Forums will close. The Classifieds, for now although not indeterminate, will continue as is.       Why is this happening now? In all honesty, it probably should have happened many years ago but I created this forum, which originally a homeschool classifieds forum for Aussies, about 20 years or so ago. I, along with others for whom I am gratefully indebted to, have spent many, many hours sweating, laughing, praying, crying, writing, apologising, pleading and speaking about this wonderful place. In this day and age of Social Media, along with our ages and therefore differernt stages of life, it is simply not viable in any way for it to continue. You may think differently and that's okay - you honestly have to have lived through some of the dramas and learning opportunities that we all have to truly appreciate why we have the standards that we do - they were borne out of necessity and not undertaken lightly. Much blood, sweat and tears have been spilt over this place. Even more friendships, learning, debate, love, prayer and great times have been had becuase of AussieHomeschool. No one could ever be more thankful for it than I.

I understand you may feel frustration or even anger and for that I apologise, I feel you. But now it is YOUR time to go out and spread the word of home education and its benefits. Share YOUR story, tell those you know and don't know about homeschooling and what is has done for your family.   On behalf of John (my long suffering and patient husband), myself and the ENTIRE moderating team over the many years - I THANK YOU and WISH YOU ALL THE VERY BEST IN ALL YOUR ENDEAVOURS.   God Bless, Susan (HomeGrownKids /  AussieHomeschool)

I Saw Nothing: The Extinction of the Thylacine by Gary Crew & Mark Wilson ex-library HC GC $15 (quite rare & very expensive elsewhere!)

"Rosie never liked Elias Churchill, and she liked him even less when he trapped the last tiger-wolf ever to be seen. Churchill didn't kill the tiger-wolf for its bounty; he bundled it into a cage, scratched and bloody, and sent it by train to some unknown place. It was moaning and sad. It liked its freedom, Rosie could tell, just as much as her father had, before he died in the bush after being trapped under a log for three days. Then Rosie and her mother had to move to Hobart to work, but it was the Depression and it was hard, especially if you re from the country."

RIVER MURRAY MARY by Colin Thiele (Weldon 1980) dj in vgc Hardcover in Excellent Condition $20 (2 copies available)

this is a beautiful, large format, 72 page book with superb illustrations, many full-page, by Robert Ingpen

River Murray Mary is Mary Agnes Baker, who lives with her parents at Gum Flat Farm on the banks of the mighty Murray.  Her father is a ‘soldier settler’, one of the men who took up a government offer of land when they returned from the first World War.

Life was hard and sometimes dangerous in the 1920s, when the soldier settlers were opening up new land.  Mary’s adventures include many encounters with tiger snakes, which abounded in that area, and the story of how she saves her dog Snap when he has been bitten by a snake is a poignant portrait of a child’s love for her animal friend.

But life was not all hardship and work, for there was time to enjoy river life…until it rose in flood and swept away everything that the family had worked for.  This gave Mary her biggest adventure when, with the help of Abel Stenross, she fought the floodwaters to bring a doctor to her injured mother.

My Place by Nadia Wheatley & Donna Rawlins (Collins 1987) HC VGC $15

(also SC GC $10)

20th anniversary edition

My Place, the classic Australian picture book, is a 'time machine' which takes the reader back into the past. It depicts the history of one particular piece of land in Sydney from 1788 to 1988 through the stories of the various children who have lived there. It aims to teach the reader about the history of Australia, about families, settlers, multiculturalism, and the traditional owners of the land. Each child's story covers a decade in time, showing their particular dress, customs and family life. The book also features maps that the successive generations of children have 'drawn' which demonstrate the things that have changed - as well as the things that have remained constant

CURRENCY LASS by Margaret Reeson (Albatross 1986-89) PB EC  $15 (2 available)

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! - suit older girls - adults

Life in the convict colony of New South Wales was harsh and often cruel. But for free-settlers like the Hassalls, Sydney was home. As one of the few eligible Australian-born girls, Mary Hassall was much admired. This recreation of her life from contemporary letters and diaries vividly portrays her emerging adulthood, romance and life in Sydney and on the islands of Tonga. This is a story of raw courage and perseverance, hope and disappointment - giving intimate insight into a vital personality that still speaks to us today.

WHERABOUTS UNKNOWN by Margaret Reeson PB EC $12

One day in late June 1942, over a thousand men were taken from an internment coup in Rabaul, New Guinea. They were never seen again, and the mystery surrounding their fate remains. From the author of CURRENCY LASS comes this vigorous account, gleaned from original wartime records and vivid memories,of a lost moment in history. In particular, it focuses on a group of missionary wives who were sent back to Australia before the Japanese invasion, and on a handful of missionary nurses who disappeared behind enemy lines....a moving testimony to the testing and strengthening of their faith.

500 pages.

WE OF THE NEVER-NEVER by Mrs Aeneas Gunn (Hutchinson 1971) HC/DJ  VGC* $8

*light spotting to dj and endpps

In 1902 Jeannie Gunn, a Melbourne schoolteacher, went with her new husband to live on the remote Elsey cattle station near the Roper River in the Northern Territory. though she spent little more than a year there, her experiences in the outback and her contact with the local Aborigines impressed her deeply, and on her return to Melbourne she set down her recollections in two books, We of the Never Never and The Little Black Princess.

AUSTRALIAN PICTURE BOOKS (or Australian author)

The first two are by Freya Blackwood who is an amazing Australian illustrator.

THE TREASURE BOX by Margaret Wild & Freya Blackwood Hardcover! EC $12 (retail $28)

CBCA award-winning illustrator

A moving and ultimately hopeful look at what we hold most dear -- and carry with us -- when we are forced to flee our homes because of war. When the enemy bombs the library, everything burns, and only one book survives. As war rages around them, Peter and his father, alongside so many refugees, flee their home, taking with them a treasure box that holds something rarer than rubies and more precious than gold. They journey through mud and rain and long cold nights, and soon survival becomes more important than any possession. But as the years go by, Peter never forgets the treasure box, and one day he returns to find it. This moving story from celebrated author Margaret Wild is illustrated with Freya Blackwood's subtly affecting artwork, which incorporates pages of children's books in translation. The result is a haunting and beautiful tale of the power of stories and the resilience of the human spirit.

Amy and Louis live next door to each other, and their lives are closely intertwined. Theirs is a life rich in imagination-they see dragons in the clouds and make castles out of cardboard. But when Amy's family moves to another country, the children are separated and the colour drains out of their lives. Until Louis discovers how to rebuild their special bond. This is a loving, moving, goose-bumping tale of deep friendship. The spare, evocative text-enhanced by illustrations of rare sensitivity and insight-strike directly at the heart.

FLAPPER, VC by Mark Wilson HC NEW $10

FLAPPER, VC is based on the true story of an Australian carrier pigeon during World War II. Raised and trained in Australia, Flapper is sent off to war in the Pacific. While on patrol deep in the jungle, Flapper's unit find themselves surrounded by enemy troops. With no other means of communication, the men's only hope of survival is Flapper, who has to evade enemy snipers and machine guns to get a message through to save the patrol. Flapper was awarded the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross for his actions that day, and his medal is proudly displayed at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. This memorable tale, illustrated with Mark Wilson's beautifully crafted and evocative artwork, is a moving story of animals in war.

LIVING BOOKS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Stickeen: John Muir and the Little Brave Dog SC EC $8

This true tale actually happened in Alaska to the famous naturalist, John Muir, and it became what he called the most memorable of all his wild days. One day, Muir set out to explore a huge glacier during a blizzard. Stickeen...an aloof little dog belonging to a fellow traveller...insisted on going along. They become stranded on the glacier. The only way out was over a precarious ice bridge, dangerous for a man and almost impossible for a dog. When amazingly they both escape, Stickeen's aloofness is replaced by rapturous adoration for Muir. The author skilfully weaves Muir's own words, the illustrations are extraordinary, and the result is a classic.

Animals You Will Never Forget (Reader's Digest) HC VGC $12

416 pages of great reading for children AND adults

I highly recommend this volume and its companion Animals Can Be Almost Human.

"From its earliest days Reader's Digest has published some of the most outstanding animal stories ever written. Animals You Will Never Forget is a collection of 72 of these stories - all of them true - about beloved pets or wild animals that have assumed special significance in the lives of the authors. There are humorous stories, stories of high adventure and stories that will warm your heart. You will meet a horse that is a ham, a coquette of a hen, a fish that likes to dance, a cat that is a dandy. You will travel far and wide: to the Antarctic with a team of huskies, to Burma with a herd of elephants, to a tiger-infested jungle in Singapore. You will be moved by the lesson a small boy learns from a mouse, by the special bond between a girl and a falcon, by the two horses who make their peace after the death of their young mistress. After reading this book you will understand why Walt Whitman wrote: 'I think I could life with animals, they are so placid and self-contained... Not one is dissatisfied, not one is demented with the mania of owning things, Not one kneels to another, nor to his kind that lived thousands of years ago, Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth.'  "

JOHNNY APPLESEED: A POEM by Reeve Lindbergh SC EC $8

hard to part with this!

"There is no lack of books about Jon Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, but this is an outstanding addition to the collection. Lindbergh's ( The Midnight Farm ; Benjamin's Barn ) poem tells the story of one man's crusade to spread apple seeds from Massachusetts to the Midwest. Jakobsen's captivating illustrations, rendered in deep tones of rustic blues, browns and golds, are reminiscent of detailed folk art paintings as they depict Johnny on the road, planting and harvesting, talking with settlers. On facing pages borders fashioned like patchwork quilt squares enrich the tale with their minute details. Too many versions of the Johnny Appleseed legend make him into a superhero; this work shows him as a gentle, religious man on a mission, a lover of the land with a consuming interest in the environment. Ages 4-9."
