      AussieHomeschool Closing Down   11/14/2019

All good things must come to an end and AussieHomeschool is no different. It is with much sadness yet even more necessity that this must be so.   As of Sunday evening, 17/11/2019 the Discussion Forums will close. The Classifieds, for now although not indeterminate, will continue as is.       Why is this happening now? In all honesty, it probably should have happened many years ago but I created this forum, which originally a homeschool classifieds forum for Aussies, about 20 years or so ago. I, along with others for whom I am gratefully indebted to, have spent many, many hours sweating, laughing, praying, crying, writing, apologising, pleading and speaking about this wonderful place. In this day and age of Social Media, along with our ages and therefore differernt stages of life, it is simply not viable in any way for it to continue. You may think differently and that's okay - you honestly have to have lived through some of the dramas and learning opportunities that we all have to truly appreciate why we have the standards that we do - they were borne out of necessity and not undertaken lightly. Much blood, sweat and tears have been spilt over this place. Even more friendships, learning, debate, love, prayer and great times have been had becuase of AussieHomeschool. No one could ever be more thankful for it than I.

I understand you may feel frustration or even anger and for that I apologise, I feel you. But now it is YOUR time to go out and spread the word of home education and its benefits. Share YOUR story, tell those you know and don't know about homeschooling and what is has done for your family.   On behalf of John (my long suffering and patient husband), myself and the ENTIRE moderating team over the many years - I THANK YOU and WISH YOU ALL THE VERY BEST IN ALL YOUR ENDEAVOURS.   God Bless, Susan (HomeGrownKids /  AussieHomeschool)

Eleanor's Farjeon's Book Stories-Verses-Plays illustrated by Edward Ardizzone pb gc $2...A wonderful anthology of stories, verses and plays chosen by Eleanor Graham, with fantastic b/w illustrations by Edward Ardizzone.

Gold Pieces by Phyllis Bentley pb gc $4.. Hilltop handloom weaver's son Dick Wade is pleased to find a boy of his own age to play with, but is he a true friend? Whose is the injured dog found on the moors? And who is flooding the area with clipped and forged coins, bringing the London authorities in with their questions and house searches? This is a gripping story based on the real history of the Cragg Vale Coiners, giving a fascinating insight into life in the Calder Valley and the local weaving industry over 200 years ago. A juvenile mystery story. The dog in the story is an Old English Sheepdog.

Charco Harbour by Godfrey Blunden pb gc $5....It is 1768. War has broken out in Europe and the British Admiralty wants a base in the Western Pacific.

So Captain James Cook and a company of nearly a hundred seamen and philosophers are despatched into those beautiful but perilous seas that lie between Terra Australis Incognita and the Great Barrier Reef, the never-before-penetrated realm of fin-back whales, sea-serpents, manatee, turtles and sharks, a maze of coral reefs and thousands of islets, some of which mysteriously send the compass needle spinning...Charco Harbour is the story of Captain James Cook's first Pacific voyage in 1768, a journey into a world to which Europeans had never been and reported back before, a journey which leads to shipwreck at Charco (near Cooktown in Queensland). At a time when Australia was terra incognita, a great navigator like Cook still displayed human failings.

The Amost All-White Rabbity Cat by Meindert DeJong pb gc $2.....A simple story by the author of The Wheel on the School about a family (father, mother and small boy) who leave their village to improve their situation in a big city, and feel uprooted.

They sign without reading a rental contract for an apartment, which forbids the tenants to have dogs, cats or children in the building. But the contract says nothing about snakes, lion-cubs, or other exotic animals (:-)

Dusty by Frank Dalby Davison pb gc $4....Dusty is the story of a dingo/kelpie cross who is employed to muster sheep, but is forever at war with his wild instincts.

The dog is one of the best dogs in the industry, no one can beat his instinct, but alas his Dingo side is too much for him to control and by night he hunts and kills the stock. It's a tale that sadly unravels into a one way and certain future for the dog. Dog lover's beware, great book but will tear the heart strings.

The Otter's Tale by Gavin Maxwell pb gc $2....The enchanting true story of Gavin Maxwell's life with the three otters he kept as pets, and the enormous changes they brought to his life. Written for children, concentrating on the otter's lives and incidents. A must read for all children, (though note the language remains  above average (by today's youth reading standards).

Gay-Neck The Story of a Pigeon by Dhan Gopal Mukerji pb ec $4.....Writing out of his own experience as a boy in India, Dhan Gopal Mukerji tells how Gay Neck's master sent his prized pigeon to serve in Word War I, and of how, because of his exceptional training and his brave heart, Gay Neck served his new masters heroically. Winner of the 1928 Newbery Medal. After being sent to a WWI battle front to be a messenger pigeon, Gay Neck is injured. After completely recovering from his physical injuries, Gay Neck's owner wonders why he won't fly. The young boy, Gay Neck and a good friend take a trip to the lamasery to learn more about Gay Neck's condition and whether he will ever fly again.

Good story with lots of action and other stories to entertain a reader.

His life is one of hardships and survival; he breaks his leg and has a long, painful healing process. Fortunately, the dog's bone does mend and fortunately he finds his way home. This book has lovely illustrations, A wonderful animal story that should not be missed. (make sure you have tissues with you when you read this book)

The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi pb ec $4....

The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings pb As new $4....An American classic—and Pulitzer Prize–winning story—that shows the ultimate bond between child and pet. No novel better epitomizes the love between a child and a pet than The Yearling. Young Jody adopts an orphaned fawn he calls Flag and makes it a part of his family and his best friend. But life in the Florida backwoods is harsh, and so, as his family fights off wolves, bears, and even alligators, and faces failure in their tenuous subsistence farming, Jody must finally part with his dear animal friend.  Ages 10+

Dragon in Danger by Rosemary Manning pb gc $1....Another gentle, beautiful book. Such a fine story with amusing, calmly resolved conflict rather than an excess of jeopardy. This sequel to Green Smoke (look through the lists to find it)  has R Dragon travelling to visit his friend Sue. What follows is a cute story which has limited peril considering it's title, but children will enjoy the sheer childlike quality of the niceness of the characters. Ages 7+

Indian Captive The Story of Mary Jemison pb ec $5....

The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene pb gc $3......In a poor, remote section of Southern Mexico, the paramilitary group, the Red Shirts have taken control. God has been outlawed, and the priests have been systematically hunted down and killed. Now, the last priest is on the run. Too human for heroism, too humble for martyrdom, the nameless little worldly “whiskey priest” is nevertheless impelled toward his squalid Calvary as much by his own compassion for humanity as by the efforts of his pursuers.

In his introduction, John Updike calls The Power and the Glory, “Graham Greene’s masterpiece…. The energy and grandeur of his finest novel derive from the will toward compassion, an ideal communism even more Christian than Communist.” High School to Adult

Bess by Robert Leeson pb gc $4....Set in Elizabethan times. tells of Bess Morten's quest of financing a colony on the island of Maravila and the ensuing adventures. Ages 10+

Sirga by Rene' Guillot pb gc $2....A rare masterwork by a french author unfortunately not as widely known as he ought to be. The writing is like a song, simple, clear, extraordinary. This book is one of those rare books you will always remember.

Christmas Spirit by Robert Westall pb gc $2...This volume brings together two stories on a Christmas theme, both set in Tyneside in the 1930s. In The Christmas Ghost, a boy receives a desperate warning from a ghost. In The Christmas Cat, a visit to a vicarage is miserable, until the arrival of an apple-pie thief and a cat.Two lovely Christmas stories. Could be read at any time of year. family love, working class life and young heroic protagonist. Highly recommended.

The Marlows and the Traitor by Antonia Forest pb gc $4....Nicola and Lawrie spend an Easter holiday by the sea with their mother, Ginty (their next oldest sister) and Peter (the brother at Dartmouth). Things start to happen when Nicola and Peter, out for an early morning walk, meet an instructor from Dartmouth who cuts Peter dead - and the excitement mounts to a tremendous, but plausible, climax, with the Marlows living up to the best naval traditions. An outstanding book, both as a stand-alone adventure, and an installment in the ongoing series.

The Magpies Said Stories and Poems from New Zraland collected by Dorothy Butler pb gc $4....This collection of tales capturing the essence of rural NZ

More Travels in a Donkey Trap by Daisy Baker pb gc $2....(Mother Culture book) This gently enjoyable book with sweet drawings tells of Daisy and her search for a donkey and trap to take her around the Devon lanes. Having acquired Darkie, a good-sized gentle jenny, and a sturdy blue trap, she has to figure out how to put the harness on and drive.

Daisy had been confined more and more by her age - 76 in this book - and lack of strength. But summoning her reduced courage she now finds herself able to get out and about; to the village for her pension firstly. She describes the lands, hedges, woods, the day at the seaside with hay lunch brought for Darkie, the day she went to the town.
Added to this is Daisy's store of memories of growing up in London and moving to the country, where her father took the workers' train to London each day. She had to go into service, and we see three different houses through her eyes, though as a 'tween-maid she saw not much but the hard work of staff in those days. What a delightful little book!

 A Gem!

The protagonist is an ex-British naval captain and his sidekick is a native of Tristan Da Cunha who served under him during WWII. The novel includes a villainous whaling magnate, several remote island, many ocean gales and a number of enjoyable action scenes.
